Preventive Care

Both natural teeth and teeth with restorations survive best in an oral environment that is clean and where the intake of harmful foods is controlled. Our program is designed to help prevent new cavities, preserve teeth that have been restored and manage periodontal disease. At the initial visit, oral hygiene instructions are reviewed and are reinforced at subsequent recall visits. Feel free to contact us if you would like one-on-one instruction of how to effectively brush and floss.  The following are helpful recommendations:

  • Brush your teeth twice a day, first thing in the morning and last thing before bed, in a circular motion with a 45° angle toward the gumline with a soft bristled toothbrush.  Brush for 4 minutes.
  • Avoid eating before bed and in the middle of the night.
  • Floss every night in an up-and-down motion while keeping the floss in a U-shape and against the tooth surface.
  • Avoid smoking.
  • Avoid sticky sugary foods.
  • Eat a balanced diet.
  • Use antiseptic and fluoride rinses as directed.
  • Have sealants placed on young permanent teeth.

Power toothbrushes can considerably help your preventative routine.  Rechargeable toothbrushes in the $75-$150 range make a considerable impact, if used correctly.  At your request, we will give you directions on how to use your power toothbrush.
